In the summer of 2006 my life took a dramatic turn. For 10 days I was confined to a small space in a hospital in Southern California, not knowing if my newborn baby son would survive the aftereffects of a severe breathing disorder which became apparent immediately after his birth.

It was only a few days after the 4th of July and the first time I had the privilege of celebrating Independence Day as an American Citizen myself.

So I had a lot of time to think and re-think my values and priorities while trying to provide this tiny bundle of new life with the touch, warmth and connection to his parents he needed to pull through. (I still keep the cell phone that I used to take the only pictures of these events. It has since "crashed" and the pictures are no longer accessible, but they are indelibly ingrained in my memory.)

Well, he did pull through and is now a happy 5-year old... but what does this story have to do with you and this event, you might ask.
